PlayStation, Xbox, PC & Cloud Gaming: Speed and Ping Requirements

What download, upload, and ping do you need for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and cloud gaming? We break down the requirements for each platform.

Gamers ask two questions about speed: "How fast is my connection?" and "Is it good enough for this game?" The answers are different depending on whether you're downloading games, playing online multiplayer, or streaming through a cloud gaming service. Here's the breakdown per platform.

Online Multiplayer: Speed Isn't the Problem — Ping Is

For online multiplayer on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, the bandwidth needed is surprisingly small — usually under 5 Mbps down and 1–3 Mbps up. What actually decides whether you'll lag is latency (ping):

PingExperience
Under 20 msExcellent — competitive play
20–50 msGood — fine for most online games
50–100 msNoticeable delay — casual games only
100 ms+Laggy — not viable for competitive play

For a deep dive, our ping and latency guide covers what drives it, and how to reduce ping walks through the fixes that actually work.

Downloading Games: The Real Bandwidth Hog

Modern game downloads are huge — 50–150 GB is normal. A 100 Mbps connection downloads ~45 GB/hour; a 1 Gbps connection, ~450 GB/hour. If you regularly buy big games, download speed determines whether you wait 20 minutes or 3 hours. Upload speed barely matters here.

Cloud Gaming Services

Cloud gaming streams the game to your screen in real time, which changes the equation: it needs sustained bandwidth and low latency simultaneously.

ServiceRecommended SpeedNotes
Xbox Cloud Gaming10 Mbps min, 20+ Mbps recommendedMicrosoft also recommends a wired connection; see official requirements
PlayStation Plus Cloud Streaming5 Mbps (720p) – 15 Mbps (1080p)Full details on the PlayStation Plus site
NVIDIA GeForce NOW15–25 MbpsHigher tiers stream up to 4K/120fps; see system requirements

Cloud gaming is brutally sensitive to latency — even with 100 Mbps, a 100 ms ping makes it feel unplayable. Test ping and speed before subscribing to a cloud service.

What Your Plan Should Be

  • Casual multiplayer only: 25 Mbps is plenty.
  • Multiplayer + big downloads: 100–300 Mbps.
  • Cloud gaming: 50 Mbps with low latency on a wired connection.

One more thing: upload speed matters for streaming your gameplay to Twitch or Discord. If you broadcast, you'll want at least 3–6 Mbps upload on top of everything else.

How to Test for Gaming

Run a speed test and focus on the numbers that matter to games:

  1. Ping — your #1 gaming metric. Below 50 ms is good.
  2. Download — for game downloads and cloud streaming.
  3. Upload — if you stream your gameplay.

Test on the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet you game on. If ping is high, our reduce ping guide and packet loss guide have the practical fixes.
