You're in the final circle, you line up the shot, and then — rubber-banding. Your character teleports behind a wall you already passed, and someone else gets the kill. Sound familiar? High ping is every gamer's nightmare.
What Is Ping and Why Does It Matter?
Ping is the round-trip time for a data packet to travel from your device to the game server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is always better.
- Under 20 ms: Excellent — virtually instantaneous.
- 20–50 ms: Great for most games.
- 50–100 ms: Playable, but you'll feel it in shooters.
- 100–200 ms: Noticeable lag. Timing-dependent actions become unreliable.
Switch to a Wired Connection
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Wi-Fi adds latency through signal processing, interference handling, and retransmission of lost packets. A wired Ethernet connection eliminates all of that.
Optimize Your Network for Gaming
Enable QoS (Quality of Service)
Most modern routers have a QoS setting that lets you prioritize traffic for specific devices or applications. Give your gaming PC or console top priority.
Disable Bandwidth-Heavy Background Processes
Before you game, check for cloud syncing, game updates, streaming services on other devices, and browser tabs with auto-refreshing content.
Choose the Right Server
Most multiplayer games let you select your server region. Always pick the region physically closest to you. For games that don't let you choose, a VPN with servers near the game server's location can sometimes provide a better route.
Router Settings That Help
Disable Bufferbloat
Bufferbloat is a common cause of latency spikes during gaming. Run a bufferbloat test at DSLReports.com. If your grade is C or worse, enable SQM (Smart Queue Management) or FQ-CoDel in your router settings.
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi (If You Must Use Wireless)
If you can't go wired, connect to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. It has less interference and generally lower latency than 2.4 GHz.
When the Problem Isn't on Your End
Sometimes high ping is caused by the game server's routing or your ISP's peering arrangements. If everyone in your region reports high ping, the issue is likely server-side.
