Your Go-To Networking Terms Reference
Whether you're talking to your ISP, reading a tech review, or just trying to understand what that speed test result actually means, networking jargon can be overwhelming. This internet speed glossary breaks down every term you're likely to encounter — no computer science degree required.
Speed & Data Rate Terms
Mbps (Megabits per second)
The standard unit for measuring internet speed. One megabit is one million bits. A bit is the smallest unit of digital data. Important: Mbps is not the same as MBps (megabytes per second). There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps ≈ 12.5 MBps. ISPs advertise in Mbps; download managers often display in MBps.
Gbps (Gigabits per second)
One thousand Mbps. Used for high-speed fiber plans and enterprise connections. 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps = roughly 125 MBps of actual download speed.
Kbps (Kilobits per second)
One thousand bits per second. You'll see this for very low-bandwidth applications — VoIP calls typically use 64–128 Kbps, for example.
Upload Speed
The rate at which data travels from your device to the internet. Matters for video calls, live streaming, uploading files, and cloud backups. Most residential plans offer upload speeds significantly lower than download speeds (asymmetric connections).
Download Speed
The rate at which data travels from the internet to your device. This is the number ISPs advertise most prominently because it's what most consumers care about — streaming, browsing, and downloading all rely on it.
Bandwidth
The maximum capacity of your internet connection. Think of it as the width of a pipe. More bandwidth means more data can flow simultaneously. See our bandwidth guide for a deeper dive.
Latency & Timing Terms
Latency
The time it takes for data to make a round trip from your device to a server and back. Measured in milliseconds. Lower latency means more responsive connections — critical for gaming, VoIP, and real-time applications.
Ping
Both a tool and a measurement. The ping command sends a small packet to a server and measures how long the round trip takes. When someone says "my ping is 15 ms," they're reporting their latency. Lower ping = lower latency = better real-time performance.
Jitter
The variation in latency over time. If your latency bounces between 10 ms and 80 ms, you have high jitter — and it'll cause audio stuttering on calls, lag spikes in games, and general inconsistency. A stable connection has low jitter.
Round-Trip Time (RTT)
The total time for a packet to go from source to destination and back. Essentially the same as latency in most contexts. Networking tools often report RTT rather than one-way delay because measuring one-way latency requires synchronized clocks at both ends.
Network Quality Terms
Packet Loss
When data packets fail to reach their destination. Even 1–2% packet loss can noticeably degrade video calls and cause retransmissions that slow downloads. Causes include congested routers, faulty cables, Wi-Fi interference, and ISP issues.
Bufferbloat
A condition where excessive buffering in network equipment causes high latency under load. Your speed test might show great throughput, but as soon as you start a download, your Zoom call turns to mush. It's one of the most common causes of "my internet is fast but feels slow."
Throughput
The actual amount of data successfully transferred per unit of time. Different from bandwidth (the theoretical maximum) because real-world factors like overhead, congestion, and protocol limits reduce what you actually get.
QoS (Quality of Service)
A router feature that lets you prioritize certain types of traffic. For example, you can tell your router to always prioritize video call traffic over bulk downloads, ensuring your meetings stay smooth even when someone else is streaming in 4K.
Connection & Infrastructure Terms
Fiber Optic
A connection using thin glass or plastic strands that transmit data as light. Offers the highest speeds (up to 10+ Gbps), the lowest latency, and is immune to electromagnetic interference. The gold standard for home and business internet.
Cable (DOCSIS)
Internet delivered over the same coaxial cable infrastructure used for cable TV. DOCSIS 3.1 supports speeds up to 10 Gbps downstream, though real-world speeds are usually 200–1,200 Mbps. Shared bandwidth in the neighborhood can cause congestion.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
Internet delivered over traditional phone lines. Speeds degrade sharply with distance from the ISP's central office — typically 5–100 Mbps. Largely being phased out in favor of fiber.
Symmetric vs. Asymmetric
Symmetric connections offer equal upload and download speeds (common with business fiber). Asymmetric connections have faster downloads than uploads (most residential plans). If you work from home and upload large files, symmetric connections are worth the premium.
NAT (Network Address Translation)
The process your router uses to translate private IP addresses on your local network to a single public IP address. It's why multiple devices in your home can share one internet connection. Occasionally, NAT can introduce slight latency or cause issues with peer-to-peer applications.
Testing & Measurement Terms
Speed Test
A tool that measures your download speed, upload speed, and often latency by transferring data to and from a test server. Results vary based on the server used, time of day, and network conditions. Run multiple tests for a more accurate picture.
Traceroute
A diagnostic tool that shows every router (hop) your data passes through on the way to a destination, along with the latency at each hop. Useful for identifying where delays or failures occur in the network path.
IPv4 vs. IPv6
Two versions of the internet protocol that assigns addresses to devices. IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (about 4.3 billion), which have been exhausted. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, providing essentially unlimited addresses. IPv6 can offer slightly better performance due to reduced NAT overhead.
Security Terms
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a remote server. Can increase latency (due to encryption overhead and longer routing) but protects your privacy and can bypass geographic restrictions.
DNS (Domain Name System)
The system that translates human-readable domain names (like speedchecktest.com) into IP addresses. Slow or unreliable DNS can make browsing feel sluggish even if your connection speed is fine. Switching to a faster DNS provider (like Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or Google 8.8.8.8) can help.
