You've probably seen ads promising "blazing-fast speeds up to 1 Gbps." But what is internet speed, really? Let's break down internet speed in plain English so you actually understand what you're paying for.

What Internet Speed Actually Measures

Internet speed — sometimes called bandwidth or throughput — is simply how much data your connection can move per second. Think of it like a water pipe: the wider the pipe, the more water flows through it in the same amount of time. With the internet, "water" is data — web pages, video streams, game updates, and so on.

When you see "500 Mbps" on your plan, that's the theoretical maximum: 500 megabits of data per second flowing between your device and the wider internet. Real-world speeds are often lower because of Wi-Fi overhead, network congestion, and distance from your router.

  • Hardware limits — an old router or outdated network card can bottleneck even a fast plan.

It depends on what you do online. A single person browsing and streaming can get by on 25–50 Mbps.
