A Market Catching Up Fast
Competition from Converge (fiber) and DITO (mobile) has pushed incumbents to raise speeds and lower prices. If you can get fiber, it's a big step up from DSL or fixed wireless. Test wired to see what your connection delivers, and expect evening congestion to pull results down at peak hours.
How to Test Your Own Speed
National averages are useful context, but the only number that matters is your own. Run a speed test on a wired connection, with other devices paused, at a few different times of day. Then compare:
- Is download near your plan's advertised speed? Consistently under ~50% suggests a problem worth investigating.
- Does your ping stay under 30 ms? Higher latency points to Wi-Fi distance or congestion.
- How does upload compare? Asymmetric plans cap uploads far below downloads.
