Italy has historically ranked in the lower half of European fixed-broadband tables, but fiber expansion (including the national wholesale network) is lifting medians. Mobile networks perform well, and 5G is widespread in cities.

Italy's national push to extend FTTH — including the wholesale Open Fiber network — means availability has expanded quickly. Whether your street has fiber determines your ceiling. If you can get fiber, do; if you're on copper, evening congestion and line length will cap your speed. Test wired and compare with your plan.
How to Test Your Own Speed
National averages are useful context, but the only number that matters is your own. Run a speed test on a wired connection, with other devices paused, at a few different times of day. Then compare:
- Is download near your plan's advertised speed? Consistently under ~50% suggests a problem worth investigating.
- Does your ping stay under 30 ms? Higher latency points to Wi-Fi distance or congestion.
- How does upload compare? Asymmetric plans cap uploads far below downloads.
